Benefits of Organic Cotton Certified by GOTS

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the strictest organic certification for textiles, covering the entire supply chain, not just the cotton fibre. Here's what that means for the sports bra you wear during movement:

    • No harmful chemicals against your skin. No BPA, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, or azo dyes. These absorb faster through the skin when you sweat.
    • Naturally breathable. Cotton allows airflow and absorbs moisture instead of trapping heat like polyester.
    • Gentle on sensitive skin. Hypoallergenic and free from synthetic dyes that can trigger chest acne, rashes, and contact dermatitis during workouts.
    • Better for the planet and its people. Choosing organic cotton means fewer pesticides and toxins in our soil and waterways, safer working conditions for farmers, and softer, healthier clothing for your skin.

    Why Choose Q for Quinn?

Most activewear is plastic. Polyester, nylon, elastane, often treated with BPA, PFAS, and other chemicals not disclosed on the label. When you sweat, your skin absorbs more of whatever is touching it. That's the part most brands don't talk about.

That’s why we created sports bras that you could feel comfortable moving in without worrying about what’s absorbing through your skin every time you sweat. On-toxic sports bras are genuinely hard to find. Most "cotton" sports bras only have cotton on the outside, while the lining, elastic, and trims are still synthetic. We use 95% GOTS certified organic cotton with just 5% elastane, the absolute minimum needed to hold the shape of a sports bra. No BPA, no PFAS, no formaldehyde finishes.

We list every component of our bras: the body fabric, elastic, thread, and closures, because we think you should know exactly what you're wearing, especially when you're sweating in it. Our sports bras are GOTS certified from farm to finished garment, and are made in Tirupur, India.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful information before choosing the right bra.

    Do cotton sports bras exist?

Yes, but they're rare. Most sports bras on the market are polyester or polyamide blends, sometimes with a small percentage of cotton on the outer layer only. A true cotton sports bra is harder to manufacture because cotton lacks the stretch and recovery that synthetics provide.

Q for Quinn makes a few options, all in GOTS certified organic cotton with just enough stretch to hold shape during movement:

    • Racerback Sports Bra — 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane. Gentle support and a flattering fit for everyday wear and natural movement. Available in solid shades or a naturally plant-dyed version with one-of-a-kind color variations.
    • Full Bust Sports Bra — 100% organic cotton, designed for fuller busts (C–F cups, fits E–H for lighter movement). Low to high support, with a criss-cross strap option for extra hold. Fully biodegradable down to the natural rubber-cotton elastics.
    • Organic Shelf Tank — 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane. Light, built-in bra support in a cropped tank you can style as a top. Best for low-impact workouts, layering, or everyday wear.

Is the sports bra 100% cotton?

Yes, our Full Bust Sports Bra is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, with natural rubber-cotton elastics, so it's fully biodegradable from fabric to finish. It's designed for fuller busts (C–F cups).

Our other styles, like the Racerback Sports Bra, are 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane. The body fabric is still 100% organic cotton; the small bit of elastane sits in the elastic components for stretch, recovery, and support. Without it, the bra would stretch out and lose its shape after a few wears.

What is the healthiest sports bra to wear?

A GOTS-certified organic cotton sports bra is the healthiest option for everyday wear and low-to-medium impact movement. Conventional sports bras often contain BPA, formaldehyde, azo dyes, and other synthetic chemicals that absorb through skin, especially when you sweat. GOTS certification guarantees none of those chemicals are used during farming, dyeing, or finishing.

What are the toxic fabrics to avoid in a sports bra?

The most common synthetic fabrics in sports bras are polyester, polyamide (nylon), and elastane. Fully synthetic sports bras often contain BPA, phthalates, PFAS ("forever chemicals"), formaldehyde finishes, and azo dyes. Independent testing by the Center for Environmental Health found BPA at levels up to 40 times the safe limit in sports bras from major brands. These chemicals absorb through skin faster when you sweat.

Can 100% cotton still be toxic?

Yes, conventional cotton can still contain harmful chemicals even when it's labelled 100% cotton. Cotton is one of the most chemically treated crops in the world, with heavy use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. After farming, conventional cotton is often bleached with chlorine, dyed with azo dyes, and treated with formaldehyde finishes. GOTS-certified organic cotton avoids all of these.

Is a cotton sports bra supportive enough for running?

No, our organic cotton sports bra is designed for low-to-medium impact activity such as yoga, pilates, walking, and barre. For high-impact sports like running or HIIT, you may need additional support.

Does your sports bra come with padding?

No, the Racerback Sports Bra doesn't come with built-in padding, but it has inner slits where you can insert your own padding(inserts not included). We have yet to find an organic alternative to moulded cups that meets our standards.

How should I wash my organic cotton sports bra?

Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle with a mild detergent. Lay flat to dry. We recommend avoiding the dryer, bleaching, and using fabric softeners, as heat and harsh chemicals can shrink the cotton and break down the elastane over time.

Why does my sports bra feel a bit stiff at first?

Organic cotton and natural fibres feel slightly structured straight out of the package because they don't have the synthetic stretch fibres found in conventional sports bras. After a few wears and washes, the fabric softens and shapes to your body. This is normal with natural fibres.

Do organic cotton sports bras shrink after washing?

Slight shrinkage is normal, especially after the first wash, because organic cotton hasn't been chemically treated to prevent it. To minimize shrinkage, always wash in cold water and air dry flat. Avoid the dryer entirely if you can.
